Bill Gates Says Power to the Poop
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced 31 scientific grants to turn poop into power.
Say it with me: Force to the Poop! I trust that you are fist-pumping when you say it, like I am right now in The Dreamer office. For too long, we as a people have neglected the greatest resource produced past the manlike body: our have excrement. Straight off that Bill Gates no more runs the day-to-day trading operations of Microsoft, atomic number 2 has upturned his eye and his billions of dollars to projects he believes will help the greater good. Since information technology was founded in 1994, The Handbill & Melinda Gates Groundwork has given millions to HIV inquiry, financial services for the poor and to help with disasters such as the Kashmir earthquake in 2005. Today, the foundation announced that it would fund 31 projects that volition hopefully turn poop into gold – or fertilizer, or energy, or drinkable water.
"Wherever people live, at that place's wastewater. It's a 24/7 thing," said one of the accord recipients, Book of the Prophet Daniel Yeh, a civil and state of affairs mastermind at the University of South Florida. "Wherefore don't we connect the undivided word picture collectively and close the intertwine?"
Yeh's NEW source uses microorganisms to remove usable methane (natural bluster) from wastewater, and leave piddle privileged in nutrients like Phosphorus and ammonium hydroxid that can be used for agriculture. Yeh will use the $100,000 Ulysses Simpson Grant to develop a prototype device that could help oneself urban centers in the tertiary world.
Among the 31 projects funded are some really amazing ideas. Zhiyong Ren from the University of Colorado Denver wants to create a system that will convert desert into electricity. Yinije Tang at Evergreen State University in St. Louis is employed on a species of fungus that will subscribe poop and wrick it into butyl alcohol, a biofuel connected equation with gasoline or grain alcohol. All of these projects were submitted back in March 2011 as part of Gates' program to "Create the Next Generation of Sanitisation Technologies". According to the lotion information, insufficient sanitization accounts for millions of preventable deaths, specially among children.
"2.1 billion of the existence's urban population use non-piped (non-sewered) sanitation technologies such American Samoa latrines, cesspools, contaminated tanks, or aquamarine privies to capture and contain their excreta (stool and weewee). These types of sanitization 'solutions' tend to represent unsustainable and are frequently detrimental to public health," the telephone for proposals aforesaid. "An estimated 1.6 million children die each year from diarrhoeic diseases, many of which are caused by fecal-oral pollution. The purpose of this call for proposals is to help make sanitation services truly safe and sustainable for the destitute."
I think it's awing that Bill Gates is using his wealth and ability to direction ability to serve the greater good. When you cerebrate about IT, his foundation is very much like Microsoft – a large organization with some small projects going happening simultaneously. That he's using the power of his foundation to help the world's poop is just the fecal sludge on the cake.
